All of the party themes are great – it’s so hard to choose one! I’d have to say “Black Vine” though. totally my style!

Budget tip: make the party a potluck and have each of your closest friends bring a dish. This makes life easier on everyone and gives each person the chance to still “show off” their very favorite specialty dish.

Dont sweat the small stuff and enjoy the guests…do what you can do ahead of time and get help from friends tossing and checking trays

I have started planning things around our “signature style” of black damask. That way I have a base of black and white that says “you are partying at erin’s house” while buying small colored items to change theme for anything you are hosting. always having a stash helps for impromptu gatherings as well.

My favorite budget friendly AND eco friendly tip is to simply REUSE. I’ve seen couples who have had a dessert bar at their wedding reception and reuse the apothecary jars to put Christmas ornaments in for a holiday party. No reason to keep that stuff stored up in a closet never again to see the light of day!

My favorite budget tip for those of you liking floral center pieces is to …. “borrow” flowers from neighbors gardens.

    Jan 8, 2009 at 12:01 pm
  • 12 Lindsay

When I’m entertaining in Florida at my parent’s house I love creeping around their yard and snipping fresh greenery and flowers for simple centerpieces that look “garden fresh”. I use old mason jars and pluck some Bougainvillea ferns and voila!

My budget tip has always been to have people bring a side dish to our parties. I provide the main dish and ask them to bring something to accompany that. It makes them feel involved and saves me a ton of money!!

Favorite Theme: Little Bohemian (sooo cute)

Budget Tip: Stock up on fancy printed paper napkins when you can find them on sale… I get most of mine from Ikea…they never fail to dress up my white dishes!

I like to use pretty glasses fill them half way up with rice and drop a votive candle in them. This way I do not have votive holders cluttering my cupboards but pretty glasses I can use everyday.

My favorite budget tip is to have people bring there own adult beverages. Often this is a large part of any party budget and I find that people don’t find bringing this. That way they get exactly what they like. Also you can do a potluck type of event and ask everyone to contribute. My friends and family are always happy just to have an excuse to all get together and a place to hang out (with no clean up) that they don’t mind helping out.

    Thanks for the chance!

My favorite theme would be Hollywood glam.
you can have a potluck dinner, make a party b.o.b,In the summer have a bbq it’s cheap you can just throw on some hamburgers and hotdogs and grab a couble bags off chips.

My favorite party on a budget is color. You can decorate with almost anything if you have a color theme. I through a birthday party for a friend who’s favorite color was green, and I decorated the entire apartment with things that were green. I even found stuff on FreeCycle and Craigslist (green party trays, candles, etc). Even some of the food was green (naturally green). It looked lovely.

My favorite “entertaining on a budget” tip is to select one or two signature drinks for your party — that way you can serve cocktails without having to stock (or restock) your entire bar.

Thanks for the chance to win!

I love the Retro Chic theme!

My budget tip is to have guests bring their favorite bottle of wine, open a few and store the rest in the wine fridge. Not buying the alcohol adds up and if a guest just has to bring one item like wine they usually will get a decent bottle.

Also – using potted florals from around the house as centerpieces; orchids, bromeliads and even cactus can work well.

LAST ONE – for your serving pieces buy ALL white piecesand it always looks pulled together. Throw in some fun linens (check out the scraps at the local fabric store) and you have your settings.

The way I throw a party on a budget is I use the resources around me. I love using things I can find outside as decorations such as sticks, flowers, pine cones, straw ect. Possiblities are endless. Also if guests ask if they can bring something take them up on the offer. Little things add up so if you make the main feature of the night and have the guests bring the rest you can throw a party that doesn’t take much of your time and doesn’t take much out of your wallet either.

Hollywood Glam is my favorite… gotta love the feathers :)

My budget tip is to use the computer, printer, and gloss paper to make coordinating accessories for any party theme. If I use a fabric, paper, piece of art, or even a greeting card as inspiration, then I can scan the item and either enlarge or shrink the image for use on invitations, napkin rings, coasters, or, just about anything that will make a setting more coordinated. It allows me to use simpler serving pieces and still set a colorful, custom table.
Social Couture has so many exciting themes, but, I think my favorite is the New Years Party. Black, silver, and plum are great together!

My best budget tip is let everyone else bring the alcohol. I have a stocked bar but hate when it turns up dry after a party. i supply everything else and in the end everyone’s a winner

My favorite “entertaining on a budget” tip was presented on HWTM: Decorating with Scrapbook Paper. That is one of the cutest, easiest, and quickest ways to entertain on a budget. Many people have piles of that stuff lying around and if not, it’s just a craft store away (and often times on sale). So, thanks HWTM for the great tip !

I love their “Girls’ Night Out” design! That layout is so perfect for a bachelorette party.

Budget Tip: Have a backyard (or in my case, rooftop) BBQ. You supply the goods for grilling, the suds for sipping and the tunes. Your friends bring the sides of their choice. Then you all just have a great time!

Fave Theme: Right now, Hawaii Five-O. The colors are so bright and happy! They make me forget it’s 20 degrees outside right now!

Hey there, my favourite theme is hands down “Black Vine” Sleek, Elegant and Sophisticated.. It works for every occasion.

My favourite budget planning tip is also heading to the dollar store. Our local dollar store is by far the best place for my decor – no-one is ever the wiser!
Another tip would be to prepare well in advance if possible – that way you can be prepared for deals and won’t get caught paying last minute “crunch fees”.

Great giveaway! Instead of trying to stock a full bar, which is so expensive, I like to serve one or two ’signature’ cocktails to match the theme or the season. Thank you!

    Jan 8, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Budget Tip: Choose your menu based on seasonal foods. If you look for deals off supermarket circulars and revolve your dishes around deals you’ll save a ton of money.

Funny, I was just “window shopping” this candelabra yesterday! My budget-friendly tip is to buy basic glass or basic white serving pieces. They go with any decor, any theme, any time of year. Also, shop discount stores like TJ Maxx & Marshalls; sales, of course; and the remnant section of fabric stores.

For my daughter’s 12th birthday I decide to throw her a luau. I wanted it to be really impressive because it was her first b-day party in a new city. However I was on almost non-existent budget. Yet I still have people talking about the “great” display that was on the main table. I did it for practically nothing. I went to a local dollar store and bought all the the supplies. I covered the table in a plastic sea-blue table cloth and poured a big, solid circle of sand in the center. I then added lots pale orange votive holders with a white hibiscus print on top of the sand. I used cheap tea lights for the holders and added shells to the sand. I then lit all the candles and added various accents around the rest of the room. It turned out great and I was out less than $10 bucks for the whole thing!

Planning a baby shower for my daughter, I needed to find vases for the centerpieces (that were affordable) I bought ceramic tissue holders for $2.50 a piece that when turned upside down will hold an arrangement of artificiial flowers. I got the look of a chunky vase at a price I could afford . I also use 3 pieces of glass and 3 martini glasses to create a 3 tiered plate for desserts. I always like to think outside of the box when doing a party …

my favorite entertaining on a budget tip…. BYOB (bring your own beverage). It saves a lot of money and people can bring something that suits their own taste while enjoying your party decorations and treats. The decorations and food will be even better because you had more money to splurge on them instead of drinks! ;)

My favorite budget tip for entertaining is very basic…streamers! The rolls of streamers that you buy at a party store or even the party aisle in the grocery store for less than a dollar come in soo many great colors! I pick out my party colors in the streamers and hang them from the ceiling to the floor in the entry way. The streamer curtain is an excellent background for pictures and sets the “party mood” in the house! A red and black streamer curtain would look very romantic with these adorable accessories for valentine’s day!

Red Dinner Party is my favorite! I used a similar color scheme for my wedding. An entertaining on a budget tip that I would recommend would be instead of having to worry about spending tons on an entire dinner menu (if this is an event for close friends) have an hors d’ouvre & champagne or dessert and cocktail party instead.

My entertaining on a budget tip is to always check out your local $1 bins at Target and 99 Cent stores. If you’re looking for a decoration in a specific style or color that you may not use again this is a cheap way to add to your overall look for an event without breaking the budget.

    Jan 8, 2009 at 2:18 pm
  • 68 chelsea a

I love their opening picture on the home page of the site. So pretty!

My fave cheap tip is PRESENTATION. who cares if what you threw together for food isnt’ very special. If you put it on a beautiful service platter and lay it out nicely (uniformly spaced) it will look fabulous. Another one: No napkin rings/frogs? Use a length of wide satin ribbon to tie a bow around your napkins. If you’re not sure of placement of silverware, make it simple by tucking it inside the napkin, buffet style. Even if you put it on an already set table, it will look gorgeous. Repurpose everything around your house, inside and out.

I’ve always loved the “red dinner party” theme…that candleabra is to die for! I just love the Black vine party especially with the green moss accents. Have been wanting to get some black and white plates. At halloween, I did all black and white instead of traditional orange. It was gorgeous!

I love having people over during the summer for a BBQ. As a way to keep the costs down I ask each guest to bring either a side dish or a dessert. It is amazing how creative people are when they only have to bring one thing. I’ve gotten some great recipes this way and we always have a good time.

I pick red dinner party, I’m getting married and our colors are red and green, so I am a little obsessed!

Best party host tip: Black tablecloth with a very simple yet BOLD flowers from the farmers market spruce everything up and make things really come together. Add brightly colored accessories (like napkin rings, napkins, drink charms.) to pull it all together.

Host a holiday party between Christmas and New Years, when you can buy holiday goodies on sale. For example, purchase those mini candy canes to hang on the side of peppermint martinis!

You can also find very cheap glassware at places such as Crate and Barrel. For my New Year’s party, we were able to buy champagne flutes for 3.95 each! That’s shockingly not much more than those cheapy plastic ones at the grocery store, plus the look great and if one breaks you won’t feel much of a loss!

Send out e-vites for smaller, less fancier events. Have an italian style dinner with pasta, bread, and soup. Its not expensive and it fills you up. I love the idea of scrapbook paper for decorating the table setting. Also, have friends and family pitch in. Game night? bring your favorite game. Big Party? Bring your favorite bottle of alcohol. a little goes a long way :)

I love the retro-chic theme. For budget entertaining, I make turkey stir-fry. I buy turkeys when they’re on sale at the holidays and have the butcher cut them in half. Then I have plenty of meat and add frozen vegetables from my garden and/or seasonal vegetables and rice. It’s fairly economical.

The Asian theme is so fun and festive…not your typical red and black decor. Tip for entertaining on a budget: If you use candles that are in glass holders (once the candle will no longer burn), clean it out and reuse it as a vase.

I am all about the “Girls Night Out”! There is a group of us gals that get together a few times a year, just to be girls, hang out and have fun! Sometimes we get a little crazy with the martini’s flowing, but I love the feminine pink with the zebra – that’s what we are all about a little bit girly with a wild side!!! Love it!

My tip for entertaining on a budget is buying decorations at the dollar store. You can usually find any colour paper napkins, and cute plastic or paper cups (if it’s going to be a larger gathering).

My entertaining on a budget is TARGET. I love to go and get awesome deals the day after xmas sale and FREE stuff. Xmas bulbs are great to use in floral vases to add color or spread around a table. The FREE stuff are great 3D frames that are 36×24. They were used for their displays. I used it for a “New Year ” banner. The other great freebie was a 2 xmas present boxes that was 3ft. tall. I’m going to use it for `a great centerpiece on a xmas buffet table. Can’t wait!

TIP: Make sure all elements of your party has multiple purposes.

I look at food presentation as part of the decor, entertainment and nourishment. i.e. a square vase of wheat grass with fruit skewers stuck in it works as a great centerpiece. The fruit skewers look like fresh flowers growing in the fields.

Presenting food nicely makes it look like you spent a lot on rather inexpensive hors doeuvres. It also acts as a nice ice breaker for guests who don’t know each other all that well.

My tip for entertaining on a budget is to provide finger foods and mixers but ask your friends to bring drinks of thier choice to help stock the bar. We always end up with more than enough liquor.
Also, a great idea for a quick recipe is to buy a frozen cheeze pizza and make it gourmet by adding ingredients such as feta cheese, sundried tomatoes, bacon, etc. then pop it in the oven.

When I entertain inexpensively, I always visit thrift and dollar-type stores (as well as garage sales, auctions, etc), buying things that I can use to decorate with, combining them with nice things I already have. You can do a lot of good with a can of spray paint, or other slight improvements. I spend way less than most anyone I know on these type of events, yet many people compliment my sense of style, and ask me for decorating/entertaining help.

Budget Tip: For parties/showers, I like to make things from paper to go along with my decor. Paper is very inexpensive but you can do so many cool things that will wow your guests, such as making paper flowers to hang from the ceiling or using tissue paper to make a topiary. Those are just a couple of ideas. If you stick with a color theme, it’s easy to pull other items you’ve made to create a whole color scheme and decor. Your guests will be impressed that you’ve spent the time to create such a masterpiece!

When we have a party with our close friends, each couple brings an appetizer. It makes our life much easier to just concentrate on dinner. Some bring dessert instead.

if doing a party on a budget, i think the food is the most vital part, so i’ll do what i can with decor with what i have in my house, but the food must be fabulous. mediocre food is never desirable. if you must skimp don’t put chargers under the plates.

also use cloth napkins, they can be picked up on sale and reused and reused just make sure to iron them and they actually work!

Ive learned that there are many ways to strech the main course with fabulouse but lesser expesive sides. So if you make the food the star of the party, everything else falls into place (a couple of bottles of wine helps, too!!)

My favorite tip? Make icebox cookie dough rolls and gougeres ahead of time, then freeze them. That way you have lots of food handy that just needs to go in the oven, and you’re not out buying more food you don’t need.

Simple stuff works well, white candles on a dark table cloth and a sprinkling of something sweet and magical like GlamourDust, or glitter. It catches the candlelight and adds a magical look. Then you can concentrate on the champagne bubbles and a simple well-cooked food. Add that red magic on offer for true style!

I’ve learned the hard way that the best way to keep to a budget is to not try and make everything yourself! Now I focus on only making one outstanding thing — be a dish, special centerpiece or drink — and buying the rest from the store. No one cares that I didn’t out-Martha myself, and I’m a lot more relaxed when party time comes. Oh, and I always make a day-of timetable so that I’m finished three hours before the party begins and I’m relaxing with a cocktail and listening to music when the guest arrive.

One of the best idea’s that I have used is to use scrapbooking paper (have it laminated) as your placemats. I decorate a Christmas tea table that sits 8 quest every year at our Church. The theme and color’s are always different. Less expense than buying a different placemats every year. We have used them at baby showers , small family get togethers. It’s fun and allows you to be very creative.

Foam core! when I was in architecture school we had to build a self supporting chair of foam core. I’ve since learned that it’s good for just about anything else. You can cover it with fabric, wallpaper, decorative paper, and cut it very smoothly with an x-acto blade…you can even sandpaper it! For our son’s Hulk themed 4th birthday we cut out a 4ft beefy hulk and spray painted it to look like Hulk! We cut out a hole for the children’s faces and it was an equal hit with the adults.

I have two beautiful daughters (ages 3 & 1) who share birthdays in June. For my older daughter’s first birthday, I didn’t want a theme so I used lots of color (colorful tablecloths, plates & utensils, ribbon, balloons). For the centerpieces I had painted the tin cans of formula that I saved and put tissue flowers in them. Also, I printed out and cut small cards out of colorful stock paper with cute questions about my daughter’s first year (ie what was her first word, her first food, etc.), and tied a ribbon on top of them. I placed these at each seat and this gave the guests(mostly adults) something to talk about and reminisce over. I got so many compliments on this party and the photos came out brilliantly because of all the color that we used to decorate our old church hall. Last year, my daughters painted little baby food jars that I had washed and saved. Inside we put their favorite candy and passed it out to each guest. For the goody bags, we gave out something that is special to both the girls that the other kids would enjoy (for instance, my oldest likes play-doh so we gave play-doh and cookie cutters and my youngest loves books so we added a ‘golden book’ in there as well.)

So, my ‘budget’ tip, is to use color and use things that pertain to the guest of honor (ie baby food jars, formula cans, etc.) in a creative and handmade way. This doesn’t need to take a long time, esp. for those working moms or stay-at-home moms who have their hands full all the time!

Our #1 budget tip is to just keep things simple, not too elaborate and to ask friends and family to bring a little something to the party.

The Hollywood Glam is awesome, it is so cute with the feathers and the mirrored balls! But the red dinner party set would be perfect for a Valentine’s Day Dinner Party I am having!

    Thanks! :)

My favorite budget trick has been to purchase (and then re-use and re-use again) a 20 clear dishes at a craft store. They are so versitile and go with just about any scheme. I’ll even print a design on card stock at home, trim, and stick to the bottom of the glass for a plate design!

My tip is to use an inexpensive table centerpiece right out of your yard such as a clipping from a tree, ivy growing wildly in my backyard and arrange around a candle that you may or may not want to light.

I have a great set of white dinner plates that I use. Then for any party, all I need to do is change up the accessories, and everything coordinates! I also keep everything from previous parties and try and reuse things. I love the Theme for New Years Eve on Social Couture! I am a big fan of the pops of pink!

Our favorite budget entertaining tip is to connect our food/menu. For our new years party, we made a great (and very light) roasted tomato bruschetta and paired it with a white bean soup/dip that we were then able to also serve with toasted pita triangles, which we could also serve with homemade hummus. It was a very warm, but very lite palette and everyone raved about it.

I’m excited at the chance to win!

    Budget Tip:
Use candles…vigil candles. You can buy them for $1 each at grochery storees in many different colors. red, blue, white, amber, cream…
they make a huge statement and can be use over and over again on a table, walkway, mantle

I tend to think people assume you have to spend a lot of money on drinks when entertaining. My mother-in-law, Alixe Lischette, was just featured on a morning news channel saying sparkling wines from Europe are a great inexpensive way to entertain on a budget. Here’s the link of her spot. http://cbs2chicago.com/video/?id=52967@wbbm.dayport.com

BUDGET TIP:: Start with what you have and work backwards. For example, you have some red envelopes left from your christmas cards and your standard white cloth napkins. Now look around and add something you have (or can purchase inexpensively) to make a theme. Like a package of chopsticks, some fortune cookies and some images and patterns from the web that would make a great chinese garden dinner party. No one will know you started with “leftovers!”

I am throwing a cookie tasting for my neighbors on the 14th of Feb. Sweets for Sweeties is the theme. Following on the cookie swaps for xmas ideas i thought this would be a great opportunity for people to get together. Everyone will bring different types of cookies or homemade candies. I will have packaging material so folks can make gifts for their love ones. Also I will have a cookie decorating table for the kids.

Don’t worry so much! We get so worked up in the details we begin to dread the actual party and can’t enjoy the company of our friends!

I often use clear or solid plates/forks with fun napkins that I buy on clearance after the season has past. I just scored Christmas napkins for a quarter!

Potluck is always fun- add a special touch by offering the recipes to your guests. I love to discover a new dish at a party and the hostess follows up to send me the recipe.

Having a signature drink for the party is economical or everyone bring their own is an excellent choice.

I would pick the Retro Baby Shower or the princess party. Both are adorable.

My tip: Buy white candles and dress them up with whatever style fits, (holly for Christmas) then take it off and add something for the next holiday. White goes with everything.

I find the wackiest and coolest table dressings in the clearance section of TJMaxx. They are so cheap and have always found something that works for my party. Once, I got some bamboo placemats, which have now been used for several Asian themed parties, a Survivor finale party, one with a Hawaiian theme and another that was for my “green” theme. Being creative you can get a lot of mileage out of some unique basics.

The “Black Vine” collection is definitely my favorite, and happens to be the same color scheme for my upcoming wedding! My fiance and I are actually modeling our colors and decor after the HWTM post of Jennifer Skog’s bridal shower (black and white damask with lime green). Black and white are stunning by themselves, but throwing in lime accents brings the palette to a whole new level. Love it.

My favorite theme is absolute the Red Dinner Party theme. Red looks good any season, for any reason. Always a classic.

My favorite dinner party tip on a budget is to do all the decor yourself. Wrap pillar candles with 3″ ribbon in your color of choice, and use the same color ribbon to tie together silverware in place of napkin rings. Candles and ribbon are SO cheap compared to fresh flowers, and can be used again for other occasions.

A good budget tip for parties is to opt for a “dessert” party or an appetizer party- going for one part of the meal can save you money! With Valentine’s just around the corner- go for a theme that invites chocolate lovers to share their favorites!

Entertaining on a budget: Glass jar + glass marbles + candles + twine = the most beautiful outdoor lighting that will enchant and brighten any outdoor party on a budget. Put the candle in the jar first, then add the marbles, tie the twine around the mouth of the jar and hang from trees, awnings, etc. Light the candle just before your guests arrive and you have a beautiful, on a dime decoration. Change the color of the marbles for the theme of the party.
