Today’s Real Party features a gorgeous take on the popular “Sugar and Spice” baby shower theme.

This chic chocolate & pink celebration was coordinated by event planner & shower hostess Kelly Balfour of Eventology Weddings and includes tons of super cute & inspiring details – like a homemade cookie buffet + carafes of chocolate, strawberry, & regular milk, adorable pink & brown ribbon accents on everything from the florals to the napkins, and seriously one of the cutest baby shower cakes I’ve ever seen!

“It was a chocolate brown and strawberry pink kind of day, from the invitations right down to the table linens and fancy chairs.

Every detail was expertly attended to – from the paper lanterns hanging above, to a custom hand-made guestbook, right down to personalized place cards at each seat.

The florals were a mix of white hydrangeas and orchids that evoked a clean and natural feel. The vases were adorned with coordinating accents using ribbon and a button.

The linens were a soft baby-pink organza and the napkins were a rich bengaline chocolate fabric. Each was tied with a pink and brown coordinating ribbon.

The gorgeous spread of food included, among other things, such delicacies such as Apricot Almond Chicken Salad, Goat Cheese Truffles, Tuscan Stuffed Mushrooms, and Blue Cheese & Walnut Sandwiches.

The adorable cake was almost too cute to cut into! In honor of the mom-to-be’s favorite flavors and in an effort to coordinate with the shower colors, the top layer of the cake was strawberry and the bottom layer chocolate. DELICIOUS!

But the pièce de résistance was most definitely the cookie-buffet!

This table-spread included many varieties of homemade cookies and each guest was invited to pack a cute little brown bag full of cookies to take home as favors.

There was even an assortment of chocolate, strawberry, and regular milk to accompany the adorable cookies for guests who might want to nibble on the goodies throughout the shower.

The mom-to-be was overwhelmed and speechless upon entering the shower….so much so that it brought her to tears!

A wonderful time was had by all!”

“My daughter, Tara loves sweets, so an ice cream/candy party was the perfect choice for her 5th birthday celebration.

We chose to host the event at our local Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor which recently opened at The Mission Viejo Shops, in Orange County, California. I asked my girlfriend, Sheri, with Sheri Valainis Events, to help me.

We wanted to completely transform the space into a magical, sweet candy palace.

For the table centerpieces, we alternated between giant ice cream sundaes and glass jars filled with sundae toppings.

To tie the look together, we also created whimsical marabou ice cream cone centerpieces with hot pink and lime green blumeboxes and set them on each end of the tables.

{Side note from Jenn: I was able to recreate the round, fluffy “ice cream scoops” for the sugar cones by tying a piece of marabou boa in knots – on on top of the other – until the boa ball reached the ideal size for the cone. Trim off any excess boa and place the trimmed end down inside the cone.}

Each place setting featured an “ice cream cone” made out of cake cones, pink carnations, and a red gumball for the “cherry on top“!

To add to the ambiance, we created a candy table straight out of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The kids loved it!

We kept the children busy with ice cream and candy related crafts and ice cream themed games.

A great time was had by all!”

I received the following question from a reader recently:

Q: “I would like to see a jungle theme party on your site unless you already have one that I couldn’t find. I’m throwing a jungle themed baby shower for my sister in June and I came to your site first to look for one. I didn’t see one so I thought I would make the suggestion.”

A: My initial thought was to direct Linda to the Wild Thing Baby Shower Theme that I created for Parents.com a while back, but since it’s been over a year since that piece was first published, I thought it would be fun to update and expand on it a bit today…

Sooo… here’s a brand new inspiration board for a “Chic & Stylish” Jungle Themed Baby Shower (kind of a more “grown up” take on this popular baby shower theme!).

STARTING FROM THE TOP:

• Table Centerpieces: feature “jungle-y” leaves and greenery in vases with a woodgrain texture and surround them with toy animal figurines.

• Banana Bunches also make for great, inexpensive centerpieces! Hang them from banana holders, like this Chrome Banana Holder Tree ($8.99 at Amazon), or display them in contemporary white bowls or glass cylinder vases.

• Opt for jungle-inspired tableware, like cool Animal Print Plates & Napkins and Banana Leaf Table Runners.

• Drinks: The bright green & yellow hues of Izze’s Sparkling Apple and Clementine flavors work great with this theme, as well as the deep brown accents on Dry Soda’s Madagascar Vanilla bottles.

• Set out some color-coordinating treats for guests to munch on, like these gorgeous macarons by Paulette, in Sicilian Pistachio, Caramel, and Madagascar Vanilla.

(Another idea: add banana chips and green/yellow/brown m&ms to Sweet & Salty Honey Nut Chex Mix or another favorite party mix…super easy, AND this could actually double as filler for your party favors!)

• Plush Toy Animals make for great accent decor (or centperpieces) that double as gifts for baby after the shower. To keep the look on the “chic” side, shop for cute, yet contemporary designs – like this adorable, knitted “Simon the South African Lion” from Etsy seller Mama4earth or Cloud B’s Gentle Giraffe Plush Sound Machine (pictured below).

• Use inexpensive toy animal figurines to dress up place settings. (The figurines pictured above are only .29 cents each and drop to .20 cents each when you order more than 11 pieces!) Embellish folded napkins with a band of ribbon and a figurine, or utilize them as place card holders.

• Animal Print Boxes ($3/set of 12 at Oriental Trading Company) make for great theme-oriented party favor packaging.

• Add a festive vibe with fun Safari Print Paper Lanterns! Just hang them with fishing wire or ribbon – no electricity/light bulbs required, especially for daytime parties! ($12.99/set of 3 at World Market)

Last but not least, why not break from the typical baby shower cake and try serving up (or even incorporating) a unique dessert option, like one of these banana-themed treats:

• Bread Pudding with Chocolate Chunks and Bananas

Today’s Real Party feature was created by Jessica of Pen n’ Paper Flowers.  It’s a stylish and adorable Birds & Branches themed baby shower that was thoughtfully inspired by the guest of honor’s nursery decor!

Added bonus: This theme could also be adapted for a “Love Birds” bridal shower or a baby shower for boys or girls hosted at any time of year swapping out some of the colors and winter accents. The centerpiece would be super cute for an Easter table as well!

“Inspired by the baby’s nursery decor, this baby shower was centered around Pottery Barn’s Penelope Bedding, a white vinyl tree decal used on the nursery wall, and beautiful black nursery furniture.

For me, the invitation is the most important detail when starting to plan an event/party. I believe this is a key element in ensuring a good number of attendees as well as providing a platform of inspiration to follow for planning the details of the party/event.

With that said, I designed an invitation using crisp colors & simple lines to reflect the winter season in which the shower was held. I referenced the white vinyl tree decal used on the nursery wall to create/design the tree on the invitation, then recreated one of the birds from PB’s Penelope Bedding and added it to the tree.

I chose a green background on the invite to tie in the green in the crib bedding and created a digital black & white polka dot ribbon along the top of the invite for contrast and “pop” as well as to add a splash of whimsy.

With the invite finished I had 4 focus colors for the party:
• White (winter/snow/crisp)
• Black (nursery furniture)
• Hot Pink (baby girl)
• Lime Green (nursery bedding)

Simplicity was key for this shower. Focusing on a dessert buffet eliminated the need for excessive decorating.

The centerpiece would need to be substantial for the “wow” factor and it seemed a tree was the natural choice to infuse the design elements from the invitation. A DIY centerpiece proved to be cost-effective when I chose a container I already had and spray painted branches from my own yard. (The full tutorial is on my blog).

Using a white, pink & green paisley tablecloth from the mother-to-be, I chose to use a combination of white and clear vessels for displaying food.

By hosting the baby shower at 2 o’clock we were able to offer a buffet of simple food items.

Apothecary jars filled with powdered donut holes and fruit platters served with powdered sugar mimicked the appearance of snow.

An apothecary jar filled with meringues served two purposes…an easy baby shower game for guests to “guess the number of meringues” and then later as sweet treats.

Bite-sized polka dot sugar cookies and white cupcakes topped with a coordinating royal icing “cupcake button” added just the right amount of color to compliment the shower decor.

Coordinating food labels for two different types of chicken salad sandwiches were placed on the dessert buffet for those guests who needed something a little more substantial.

Pink lemonade served in pink sugar-rimmed glasses.

Water bottles were wrapped in solid pink scrapbooking paper along with a strip of black and white polka dot ribbon.

As guests arrived, they were led to a “sign-in” table where they were encouraged to grab a pen and a “wish tag“.

I created the circular wish tags to match the invites and they served five different purposes:

First, the guests were to write a “wish” of some sort for the new baby. Second, guests were encouraged to write down a suggestion for naming the baby. Third, the wish tags were hung on the buffet centerpiece as an added design element. Fourth, the wish tags served as another shower game because one of the wish tags was secretly marked & at the end of the shower a winner was announced. And finally, fifth, these wish cards were given to the mom-to-be at the end of the shower as a keepsake.

For the favors I decided to make jumbo sized sugar cookies to match the shower decor. The cookies were packaged in clear cellophane bags. For another splash of “winter” I sprinkled white cake sparkles inside the bag to mimic snow.

I stapled the bags closed using matching ribbon and then displayed them in a white wooden tray filled with snow. The tray also had a miniature white christmas tree in the center for the cookies to surround.

Keeping it simple, I created one large “thank you” tag and placed it in the branches of the tree instead of creating a “thank you” tag for each individual favor. It was just as effective.

I was repeatedly approached by guests commenting on how simple, yet how beautiful everything was!

Here are my two favorite “simple”but very effective elements used repeatedly throughout the shower decor:

• Fake snowflakes – used at the base of the tree centerpiece as well as around jars/vessels/table decor and in the favor tray.
• Ribbon – Black & White Polka dot ribbon in various sizes as well as some hot pink ribbon with black fake stitching. This was used on just about all glass vessels & serving trays, wrapped around the tree centerpiece, on the pen holder at the sign in table & used on the favor packaging.

The beauty of this baby shower is that it can easily be adapted to welcome a baby boy.
It could also easily be transformed into a “Spring” shower by removing the winter elements and adding bits of wheat grass to the decor.”

“Some of my favorite design elements included…

• the beautiful invitations adorned with 2 crystals “eggs” on the front to tie in what we referred to our babies as – “The Diamonds”

• the Wishing Tree (accompanied by a custom made feather pen) that served as a guest book

• custom designed and printed water bottle labels, menus, game cards and all other stationery pieces (graphic design by SHE PAPERIE + design boutique)

• the cookies in a jar “sweet tweets” favors that each guest took home (inspired by the ever talented Bakerella)

The dinner portion of the evening was also really wonderful…

As a surprise to me, the main men in my life (my husband, my father, my brother, etc.) acted as our waiters for the evening and served up a delicious fare!

The food included:
• a Giada De Laurentiis Pasta Primavera (recipe found here)
• individually made Parmesan Cheese cups that “nested” a fresh mixed green salad
• garlic stuffed mushrooms, Caprese salad skewers, and Italian meatballs
• “Oh So Precious Pink Punch,” “Lullabye Limeade,” and “Baby Bliss Citrus Punch”

…and the best part was the deliciously adorable chocolate bundt cakes that had spun sugar nests on top of each and every one!”

Today’s Real Party baby shower feature is especially near & dear… it was actually my own!

The shower was hosted earlier this month by 4 of my close friends – Leslie, Sarah, Mimi, and Jen… and they did such a great job – I was totally blown away! It was so odd to be on the receiving end this time… and I sincerely hope that the people I host showers for feel as special & loved as they made me feel at this one – thanks again girls! =)

Knowing my love for tropical flowers/foliage and all things giraffe, the girls created a “Modern Menagerie” (a.k.a. “modern jungle”) theme for the baby shower, which also coordinated with the nursery and felt especially thoughtful. I about died when I saw the huge giraffe-print paper lanterns!

The color palette was a fabulous bright pink, brown, and kelly green (no baby pastels!). The pink hue coordinated with the color of the gorgeous protea featured in the centerpieces (along with papyrus, china mums, & ti leaves)… and I absolutely adored the little toy animal figurines that were spray-painted copper and even glued to some of the vases!

Since the hostesses were from all over, the party was hosted at my own house, so it felt especially strange to not have to do anything for the party – from the design & set-up (which was a complete surprise!) to the serving & clean-up… but “strange” in a wonderful and very much appreciated way!

AND… being a ridiculous sweet tooth, of course this adorable candy & dessert buffet was one of my favorite elements of the party…

The buffet featured lots of colorful treats from ACandyStore.com, as well as sugar cookies, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and frosted marshmallow brownies – all homemade by Leslie. YUM!

Another favorite part of the shower – the signature drink! Bartender Mimi served up both mocktail and cocktail versions of this ridiculously yummy (and pretty!) Raspberry-Apple Mojito:

And now for more sweet stuff… the adorable cake perfectly matched the Modern Menagerie shower invitations from Tiny Prints!

The matching stickers were also used on the take-out-style candy buffet boxes, and the coordinating mint tin favors were included in the table place settings (see image #3, above) – which really helped to tie the entire room together.

I stumbled across these adorable nylon ladybugs recently and thought they’d be the perfect starting point for a Modern Ladybug party theme!

Ladybugs are always cute for kids birthday parties and “Lovebug” Valentine’s Day parties, but this theme can even translate beautifully for a girlie baby shower or bridal shower.

For adult-friendly parties, just make sure to focus on decorative elements that are chic & stylish, as opposed to overly “cutesie”; for example – the grass & gerbera flower arrangements pictured below, contemporary polka dot partyware, and a cool red signature drink like a Raspberry Collins or Watermelon Mojito.

Whatever your particular occasion may be – from a 1st birthday to a bridal shower – here’s some inspiration to get you started…

“Our pregnant friend Tracy is on bed rest and so we wanted to do something extra special and over the top in celebration of her and her “little peanut”. Not knowing the sex of the baby, they refer to their little one as “Peanut” – so we decided to run with that and made “Oh Peanut” our tagline.

The invitation started the whole thing off – it was a really small shower (just 8 people) giving us time to create something that we wouldn’t have been able to for a larger number of people. We wanted the invitation to make a statement and thought pinwheels would be something we could make and could carry through to the rest of the shower.

From there our theme was born: Pinwheels and Pom Poms!

Tracy has chosen Robert Kaufman’s Metro Market Chickens fabric for her bedding and color scheme for the nursery, so we drew our inspiration from that and stuck with greens, yellows, blues and browns.

After deciding on the color scheme the rest was a piece of cake! As long as you have a color or group of colors to work with keeping an event cohesive is easy.

We made smaller (less complicated!) pinwheels to decorate the cupcakes, hung pom poms from pomlove on the ceiling, adorned the doorway with a cute “oh peanut” banner printed by Papier Gourmet, and made some scrumptious sugar scrub with the line “from our shower to yours” on the tag.

We even had our own personal caterer (Kari’s oh so talented husband) to cook us brunch!

The shower was a hit – it was a great group of ladies, an amazing meal, a fabulous atmosphere all in celebration of a great friend and her little peanut!”

I had a lot of fun with the lollipop displays for last month’s Berry Sweet Baby Shower and wanted to share the DIY info with you because this concept translates so well to ANY color palette or occasion – they’d even work well for holiday parties! Added bonus: the lollipops double as take-home party favors.

Pictured above is the “YUM Lollipop Display” and below is “Sweet Baby Girl Trio“. DIY details for both displays are below, along with downloadable versions of the tags. Enjoy!

••• YUM Lollipop Display •••

You’ll Need:
• rectangular planter/vase (such as this one)
• craft styrofoam
• Pinwheel Lollipops
• YUM Tags
• 2.5″ Circle Craft Punch or other circle cutter
• red m&ms (available at Michaels or online) – or a similar candy
• hot glue gun

Optional Vase Embellishments (as pictured here):
• Rectangle Mod PVC Curtain (8 rectangles from one strand)
• ribbon
• craft rhinestones

Directions:

1) Embellish vase as desired. For this party, I was already using individual strands of a Rectangle Mod PVC curtain ($18.99 at shopwildthings.com) as decor in various other areas of the party, so I removed a few of the rectangles from a leftover strand and hot-glued them on top of the ribbon.

Inexpensive craft rhinestones added some sparkle to the pvc rectangles and also covered up the tiny holes on each side of them (where the jump rings used to be). The rhinestones ALSO covered up the evidence of the hot glue that adhered the rectangles to the ribbon, which was great since they’re translucent.

2) Cut craft styrofoam to fit securly within the vase, making sure it’s at least 3″ high so that it provides a sturdy foundation for the large lollipops. Don’t go all the way to the rim of the vase though – you’ll need some room for the “filler candy”.

3) Pour red m&ms (or similar candy) over the styrofoam, covering it completely.

4) Add the YUM tags to the lollipops. Download them right here: in PDF or JPEG format, then cut them out using a 2.5″ craft punch, a circle cutter, or scissors and a sturdy hand. =) Use doublestick tape or glue to attach them to the lollipops (which come cellophane-sealed).

5) Insert the lollipops into the styrofoam as desired. (I used 3 rows here.)

6) Done! Place on candy/dessert buffet, or use as a table centerpiece.

••• Sweet Baby Girl Lollipop Display •••

*This display is essentially the same process as above, with the following modifications:

1) Use a trio of vases – with alternating heights – instead of one large vase. (The 3 white vases pictured here were purchase at Michaels.)

2) The styrofoam height will need to be taller for these, so floral foam blocks are great for this one.

3) You can use up to 3 different types of candy for the “fillers”. (Cherry Gumballs, Licorice Wheels, and foil-covered Chocolate Raspberry Balls were used here.)

4) Download the “SWEET”, “BABY”, and “GIRL” tags in PDF and JPEG formats. Cut them out by hand, leaving a little white border (from the paper background) all the way around the shape.

Today’s Real Party feature is a fantastic “Safari Luxe” Baby Shower created by the ever-creative Vanessa, Cortnie, and Jen of Lollipop Events and Designs.

In addition to the gorgeous and outside-the-box baby shower decor, what I also love about this party is the meaning behind the theme, which was inspired by the Safari honeymoon trip of mom and dad-to-be. Personal touches like this always make celebrations all the more special for the guests of honor!

“Step into the wild with this Safari Luxe style baby shower. Silver elephants, wooden giraffes, hanging monkeys and white ceramic elephants came out of the wildlife to play!! Inspired by the parents-to-be’s safari honeymoon trip, we transformed the rugged feel of the African adventure to the glamorous conglomeration of white animal sculptures, mirrored details and rhinestone elements.

To create the opulent décor style, we conjured the color palette based upon the Safari inspiration, mixing the main colors of tangerine & aqua with cream & white to create an elegant element to the design.

The Table

Mosquito netting draped over the table, hanging from the center focal point to both sides of the cabana. Instead of using tiebacks for the mosquito netting drape, we filled white lanterns with baby’s breath.

Substituting the standard chandelier, we created a custom mobile, which hung over the main tablescape. The mobile glittered in the sun with hand strung crystal beads, rhinestones and wood animals, which hung at different heights.

For the main floral centerpiece we mixed white flowers with wood branches and cattails, combining the white palette with the rustic natural feel.

Custom made linens created a bold look, earth colored twine tied together the utensils, while lavish silver elephants created the luxe feel for this tablescape.

The Food & Drink Tables
Passports were not needed to enjoy this Safari adventure! Guests ventured to the dessert and catering table, which were styled for a treasured journey.

Mosquito netting hung from the center focal point hovering over the catering table, creating a whimsical feel. To play with heights, we overturned tree-like vases and topped them with white platters.

Custom catering tags were made to thread the design concept throughout every detail of the décor. Mixing white ceramic elephants with earth tone risers created plush habitat feel.

For the drink and dessert table, we hung a canvas art installation of birch branches as the backdrop.

A combination of mirrors, white ceramics and modern vases created an refined feel, while the hand-made Palm Tree (DIY) shaded the table below it, bringing the wildlife back to the decor.

Every guests was reminded of their adventure as they sipped their straw reading, “Sippin’ Safari.”
